Overview

A smarter approach to dust extraction in recycling

Recycling facilities handle complex material flows every day, and with them comes a constant challenge: dust. In processes where waste is sorted, conveyed, and processed, airborne particles can affect both equipment, employees, and the surrounding environment. That makes effective dust extraction an essential part of modern recycling operations.

In this project, NEU-JKF Nordic contributed to a solution developed in collaboration with Viggo Bendz for Copenhagen Municipality. The objective was to support a more efficient and environmentally responsible approach to handling bulky waste — with a system designed to improve air quality, operational reliability, and the overall working environment.

JKF has worked within the recycling industry for many years. This project is a strong example of how collaboration, environmental responsibility, and operational efficiency can come together in a single, coherent installation.

The challenge

Handling bulky waste responsibly

The aim was not only to address current needs, but also to anticipate and prepare for future demands. Every aspect of the installation had to support a facility that could grow alongside operational requirements.

Dust control

Bulky waste handling generates significant airborne dust at multiple points in the process — from reception and sorting through to conveyance and output. Without targeted extraction, dust accumulates and affects both personnel and equipment.

Environmental responsibility

Modern recycling operations must balance throughput with environmental obligations. Airborne particles can escape the facility perimeter, affecting the surrounding environment and creating compliance challenges for the operator.

Process integration

New extraction systems must fit into existing infrastructure without disrupting operational flow. Duct routing, extraction points, and fan placement all need to work around the constraints of a live facility.

Operational efficiency

A future-ready solution was needed, not just a temporary fix. The installation had to support reliable daily operations while providing a foundation for potential expansion as the facility's scope and throughput grew.

Engineering approach

From concept to solution

Effective dust extraction begins long before any equipment is installed. It starts with a thorough understanding of the process, the facility, and the constraints that shape what is actually possible.

Understanding the process

We begin by understanding how material moves through the facility, where dust is generated, and which areas require the highest level of control. This creates the foundation for a solution tailored to the real process rather than a standard off-the-shelf setup.

Process mapping identifies critical extraction points — the locations where airborne particles are most concentrated and where capture is most effective. It also clarifies airflow requirements and the constraints imposed by the existing building and infrastructure.

Engineering the system

With the operational requirements mapped out, the solution is developed through detailed system design. Layout, airflow paths, duct routing, filtration, and component integration are all considered to ensure the solution works as one complete system rather than a collection of isolated components.

Engaging with the municipality opened avenues to integrate advanced filtration systems in ways that were both innovative and impactful — something that becomes possible only when the engineering process is collaborative from the start.

Turning drawings into reality

The value of the 3D engineering phase is that stakeholders can understand the installation before implementation begins. It improves coordination, reduces uncertainty, and creates a clearer path from concept to final execution.

When the design phase is thorough, the transition to physical installation is smoother, faster, and less prone to the kind of last-minute adjustments that can delay a project and add cost.

Real-world implementation

The installed solution

The completed installation reflects the strength of a coordinated engineering approach. By combining filtration, ducting, air handling, and process understanding, the final setup supports a cleaner and more controlled operation around the bulky waste line.

01
Ducting

A network of duct sections routed from the primary dust-generating points through to the filtration unit, designed to maintain adequate airflow velocity throughout.

02
Filtration

Industrial filtration equipment captures airborne particles from the extraction airstream before treated air is returned to the environment or recirculated.

03
Fans

Fan units sized to the system's airflow requirements, maintaining the pressure differential needed to draw dust-laden air from all extraction points through the complete system.

04
System integration

All components designed and installed as a connected whole — coordinated around the waste handling process rather than added as independent afterthoughts.

Customer perspective

In the words of the customer

Every successful project is measured not only by technical execution, but also by how it is experienced by the people behind it. In this case, the collaboration with Viggo Bendz highlights the value of combining practical needs with engineering expertise.

Value created

What this solution delivers

The strength of this case lies not only in the installation itself, but in the broader value it creates. By aligning engineering, process understanding, and environmental responsibility, the project supports both daily operations and long-term development.

Cleaner air in the working environment

Targeted extraction at dust-generating points improves air quality for personnel working throughout the facility.

Better control of dust in the process

Systematic dust capture reduces the volume of airborne particles circulating through the production environment and equipment.

A solution adapted to the real facility

The system was designed around the actual constraints and layout of the facility, not forced into an unsuitable standard configuration.

Stronger environmental responsibility

Effective dust containment limits the environmental footprint of the recycling operation and supports compliance with applicable requirements.

Efficient integration with operations

The system was designed to integrate with the existing operational flow and support day-to-day handling activities.

A reliable foundation for future needs

The installation was designed with future capacity and operational development in mind — a foundation rather than a stop-gap.

Industry context

Why dust extraction matters in recycling

As the recycling industry continues to grow, so does the need for systems that protect both people and processes. Dust extraction is not a secondary detail — it is a central part of creating safe, efficient, and sustainable recycling facilities.

Recycling is essential to a greener future, but the process still needs to be managed responsibly. Every material handled in a recycling facility — wood, plastics, paper, metals, and more — can generate airborne particles that present challenges for the working environment, equipment reliability, and environmental compliance.

Dust extraction supports safety, compliance, and operational quality at once. NEU-JKF Nordic helps customers create practical, efficient, and cleaner solutions — systems that reflect the complexity of real industrial processes while remaining straightforward to operate and maintain.
