Dust extraction for agro & milling

  • Cleaning
  • Grinding
  • Mixing
  • Material handling

The handling and processing of agricultural materials can generate dust throughout the production process.

Grain, seeds, rice, sugar, coffee and other bulk materials are transported, cleaned, processed, mixed and packaged using many different types of equipment. At each step, movement and mechanical processing can release particles into the surrounding air.

The characteristics of the dust depend on both the material and the process.

This means that dust extraction for agro and milling facilities should be designed around the actual production flow rather than treated as a standard application.

NEU-JKF Nordic supplies products and system solutions for industrial dust extraction, combining filters, fans, separators, rotary valves and duct systems around the requirements of the individual process.

The process

Dust can be generated throughout production

In many agro and milling facilities, there is no single dust source.

Dust can occur at several points in the production chain.

Receiving and material handling

Bulk materials are often transferred between trucks, silos, conveyors, elevators and process equipment.

Every transfer point creates movement in the material and can potentially release dust.

Extraction therefore needs to be considered at the points where materials change direction, fall between equipment or are transferred into another process.

Cleaning and separation

Raw agricultural materials often need to be cleaned before further processing.

Dust, light particles and other unwanted material can be released during screening and separation.

Effective extraction around these processes helps keep the dust from spreading to other areas of the plant.

Grinding and milling

Grinding changes the physical structure of the material and can produce much finer particles.

These processes can therefore create significantly different extraction requirements compared with simple material transport.

The extraction system needs to match both the process equipment and the resulting dust load.

Mixing

When different ingredients or processed materials are combined, dust can be released during loading, mixing and discharge.

The design of the extraction points should therefore consider how materials enter and leave the mixer.

Packaging

Dust control may also be required at the final stages of production.

Filling bags, containers or other packaging can release particles that have remained within the processed material.

Local extraction can help control the dust close to the filling point.

Materials

Different materials require different approaches

Agro and milling is a broad category.

A system handling grain does not necessarily have the same requirements as a system processing sugar, coffee or seeds.

Particle size, material characteristics, process temperature, humidity, production volume and equipment layout can all influence the extraction solution.

For that reason, the design should begin by understanding exactly what is being processed and how the material moves through the factory.

This information helps determine the required airflow, filtration technology, duct dimensions and material-handling components.

Filters

Filters separate dust from the extracted air.

The appropriate filter configuration depends on factors such as dust characteristics, air volume and the way collected material needs to be handled.

Cyclones and separators

Mechanical separation can be useful in applications where larger particles or significant material loads need to be separated from the air stream.

Rotary valves

Collected material often needs to be discharged from filters or separators without disrupting the operation of the extraction system.

Rotary valves can form an important part of this material-handling process.

Fans

Fans create the airflow that moves air and material through the extraction system.

Their operating point should be selected around the resistance and airflow requirements of the complete installation.

Duct systems

Ducting connects the individual extraction points to the central equipment.

Routing, dimensions and transitions all influence the pressure loss and material transport through the system.

Operation

Reliable operation

Dust extraction should support production rather than becoming a source of unnecessary complexity.

Equipment should be accessible for inspection and maintenance, while filters and other components should be selected with the operating conditions in mind.

The system should also be capable of handling the expected dust load during normal production.

Where production varies over time, it can be relevant to consider how the extraction system responds when different machines or process lines are operating.

Process first

Designed around the process

NEU-JKF Nordic can supply individual extraction components or support the development of a broader system solution.

The starting point is always the process.

By understanding what material is being processed, how it moves through the plant and where dust is generated, the extraction system can be designed around the real production requirements.
